How do I use the Focus Wave Fire Point?

The Focus Wave Fire Point is an NFC Tag, used to register your safety in the event of a Fire Alarm.

This guide will look at:

  • Requirements for using the Fire Point
  • How to use the Fire Point
  • Important Safety Note
  • Troubleshooting

Requirements for Using the Fire Point

You need to have a mobile device that is NFC compatible. If your phone is an Android or Apple device from the last ten years then there’s every chance you have this feature.

You may need to Enable NFC in the Settings App of your device.

You also need to have the Focus Self Service App installed on your phone, and you need to be logged in. There is a separate guide about getting set up with Self Service.

The final piece of the puzzle is that your Focus Supervisor must have set you up to use the Fire Point.

If everything is working, your Self Service App will have a ‘Fire Safe’ button on the main screen.

Please note that your individual app screen may be laid out differently to this, depending on what you use the app for. The important thing is you’ll have the ‘Fire Safe’ button.

How to Use The Fire Point

The Focus Wave Fire Points are intended to be put in safe places, ideally outside at or near your Fire Muster Points. By using one you are communicating that you are ‘Safe’, and you should only use one if you are happy to make that report. If in any doubt, or you wish for more information, please speak to your nearest Safety Representative.

In the event of a Fire Alarm or Drill, approach a Fire Point and tap the ‘Fire Safe’ button.

Depending on your deice, you should see one of the above overlays.

Hold your phone near to the Focus Wave Fire Point. You should get a confirmation that the scan has been successful.

Important Safety Note

The Fire Point is intended as a tool to help safety. In all cases your personal safety is the most important factor. If for any reason you judge it unsafe to use then please don’t. Simply follow your evacuation procedures to the best of your ability.

Troubleshooting

I don’t see a ‘Fire Safe’ button

Possible causes:

  • You don’t have an NFC enabled device
  • Your Focus Supervisor has not granted you access to the Fire Point Feature

I get ‘This is Not a valid Fire Point’

This means the Fire Point has not been set up correctly within Focus. Please refer to your Focus Administrator.

I get ‘Unable to Clock In/Out’

If you attempt to Clock In or Out with a Fire Point it will fail, because it is not a clocking device. Instead of choosing ‘In’ or ‘Out’ on your app screen, please choose ‘Fire Safe’.

I get ‘NFC Scan Error’

This means the Fire Point has not been set up correctly within Focus. Please refer to your Focus Administrator. It can also be caused if you attempt to use a Focus Wave Attendance Tag as a Fire Point, which is not possible.

I get the ‘Please hold your phone…’ Message, but nothing happens when I scan

It may be that your device’s NFC reader is faulty or weak. The actual position of the reader in your device will vary from one phone to another. If your phone is in a case and it is practical to do so, try removing it.

If others have similar problems with the Fire Point then it could be an issue with the sticker - pass the information on to your Focus Administrator to investigate further.
